Six Rounds, Five Apps and No Participation Trophies
It has been some time since short-drama apps were a fringe curiosity. Per Sensor Tower, the category earned about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue in Q1 2025, with 49% of it coming from the US. Roughly $2.8–3B was the figure for full-year 2025, and the quarterly figure had grown to about $750M by Q1 2026. ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave are the five names that lead the conversation, and any shopper who has searched a store for a short reels app has come across dramasonline at least one of them. On the surface they look identical, with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. The differences lie underneath, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras, and they affect what you pay and where you can watch. We ran them through six rounds, naming a winner in each, and used only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.
The Full Comparison Table
Here is the entire field on one screen before the rounds start. Prices are the figures shown in the US App Store as of September 2026, and they differ by country, platform and promotion. Install counts come from each app’s Google Play listing. Market shares are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. A cell that says “not reported” means no reliable source published the figure; we would rather leave a gap than guess. The grid is the scoreboard, and the rounds below provide the commentary.

Round 1: Ownership and Size
ReelShort is the incumbent, and it still holds the most weight. It was launched by Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group, in August 2022, and MPA gives it about 29% of the market outside China. Its 2025 revenue stands at $785M in MPA’s estimate, and MPA forecasts $1.05B for 2026. Launched in April 2023 and now holding about 21%, DramaBox is run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. By Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first, even though in Q1 2025, Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M. Though DramaWave, often mistyped as “dreamwave”, is the youngest app here, it already has about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly topped $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax, which operates from Hong Kong, appears to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. My Drama is the minnow, with 5M+ Android installs, but it is the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. For context, GoodShort, which sits just outside this field, holds about 6%. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.
Round 2: Cost
Nowhere else do the apps look as alike. A weekly pass at about $19.99 is sold by ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave in the US App Store, and each one auto-renews. ShortMax also lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99. Going a different route, DramaBox offers auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. The only verified monthly plan in these US listings, DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, is the standout. Since four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass come to about $80, a monthly plan at less than half that is the better buy for steady viewers. Winner: DramaWave, thanks to a monthly plan that undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin. Country, platform and promotion all affect prices, so the number on your screen may differ.
Round 3: Watching for Free
The marketing gets loud and the details get thin around free viewing. ReelShort’s own blog states the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, and one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes. Keep a seven-day check-in streak and you get 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. The easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying is via ReelShort’s official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. DramaBox has free options too, but its exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators are unofficial and never a safe shortcut, so stay away from them. Winner: ReelShort, clearly.
Round 4: Devices and Platforms
These apps truly diverge on the question of screens. ReelShort covers iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, and it also streams in a browser at reelshort.com with progress that syncs across devices. ShortMax also offers web browsing, because its domain redirects to the ShortTV website. DramaBox’s website mostly sends you back to the app, and DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps. The trump card belongs to My Drama, which has an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. Winner: ReelShort overall, with My Drama claiming the living room.
Round 5: Catalog and Originals
On raw numbers, ShortMax is untouchable. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. By January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had made more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, mostly dubbed Chinese adaptations. DramaWave advertises 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, and according to reports, more than 80% of its newly released content is AI-generated. The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, help ReelShort win on recognizable hits, and both of them went viral in November 2023. An LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis are DramaBox’s response. My Drama has the most interesting pipeline, as Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, on sheer volume.
Round 6: Extras and Fine Print
Here, DramaWave runs away with it. Offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video are promised in its App Store listing, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. Viewers who switch between phone and laptop will find ReelShort’s cross-device sync the next most useful perk. And take a look at the fine print, which varies more than the prices do. My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity, and ShortMax’s terms state refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”. Always cancel in App Store or Google Play settings, because on any of these apps deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Round winner: DramaWave.
The Final Picks: Best For
No single short drama app wins every round, which means the best choice depends on how you watch. For web viewing, ReelShort is best, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. Best for Apple TV is My Drama, the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. Best for sheer volume is ShortMax, whose claimed 50,000+ dramas dwarf everything else in the grid. Pairing offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan, DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers. Best for backing the current revenue leader is DramaBox, ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. Best for free, legitimate sampling is ReelShort again, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Feeling tempted by all five? Choose one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
